NewMedia Centre Stories

Opening Academic Year 2025

Overview

Our biggest livestream project is the yearly opening of the academic year early September. We’re briefed with a theme for the event and work together with the events and communications departments to put together a show for the new students and staff.

Process

We start with brainstorming stage acts that fit the theme. After workshopping a timeline for the event, we start thinking about possibilities for the stage design. This is also when our graphics department starts sketching out designs and recurring graphical elements. These ingredients form our proposal towards the events and communication departments. When this is greenlit, we find a production partner to build the stage design, finalize the event timeline, and sketch out camera positions for the livestream.

Reflection

The Opening Academic Year is a great project to work on because we have the time and the budget to produce a show that incorporates all the talent we have at the NewMedia Centre. And since most events we do aren’t targeted directly towards students, it’s nice to design an event that thrives on a dense program with high energy content, dynamic lighting and sound and high production value.
